Blue Bombers put up a fight, fall in five-setter

LAKE PLACID – The Lake Placid volleyball team is on a hot streak, but had to settle for a five-set loss Monday against one of top teams in the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference.

After dropping all of its matches last season and starting this year 0-9, Lake Placid rebounded with two straight wins last week, beating Saranac Lake and Peru.

The Blue Bombers put up quite a fight Monday against Plattsburgh before falling 25-14, 24-26, 18-25, 25-23, 25-22. Lake Placid is now 2-10, while Plattsburgh is 8-4 and in third place in the conference.

Taylor Maiorca and Brenna Garrett led the way for the Blue Bombers. Maiorca put down seven kills and seven assists to go along with two digs and one block. Garrett racked up six aces, seven assists, seven kills and 15 service points.

Ally Wallace chipped in six points, three aces, two kills and four digs, Alexis Megliore had six digs and seven points, Kiana Fell had four kills and Emily Eaton collected eight points, three aces and three digs to contribute for Lake Placid.

Sam Martin had a huge night for the Hornets with 16 kills, seven digs, six aces and 16 total service points. Teammate Rachel Bedard collected 16 two aces.


AuSable Valley 2, Lake Placid 0

CLINTONVILLE – The AuSable Valley girls soccer team scored twice in the second half to secure a 2-0 victory over Lake Placid on Monday.

Rachel Knapp scored the game’s first goal just after the second-half kickoff, then Meghan Strong piled on another tally 13 minutes later to give the Patriots the advantage.

Laura Stanton held strong in goal for the Blue Bombers with 10 saves. AuSable Valley held a 15-8 edge in shots taken.

Lake Placid is 3-8-2 overall. AuSable Valley is 4-8.
