Saranac Lakers return with SUNY Canton
LAKE PLACID – College hockey returns to the Olympic Center tonight as SUNY Canton and Skidmore College face off at the 1980 Herb Brooks Arena in a game slated to start at 8 p.m.
Canton is entering its second season as an NCAA Division III school and kicked off the season Friday at home against the University of New England. Saturday’s game will be the second of three contests for the Roos in a span of three days. They will be playing a 24-game schedule this season.
Tonight’s game will be the season-opener for the Thoroughbreds, who compete in D-III as a member of the Eastern College Athletic Conference East Division.
Three Saranac Lake natives are expected to play important roles for Canton this season, starting with first-year head coach Trevor Gilligan, who was named to the position this past summer. Gilligan played hockey at Saranac Lake High School and transfered to the Northwood School, before going on to play at SUNY Oswego, where he was a member of the Lakers 2007 NCAA Division III national championship squad. Prior to taking over at Canton, Gilligan’s most recent coaching job was at the Northwood School.
Two former Saranac Lake Red Storm skaters are also first-year members of the Roos men’s ice hockey team and both are defensemen. Logan McDougall is a junior transfer from Johnson and Wales University and Kyle Dora is a freshman who played at the National Sports Academy in Lake Placid a season ago.
Skidmore finished with an 8-9-1 record regular-season record last year and is led by Neil Sinclair, who is entering his eighth season as the team’s head coach.
