Albany gets 1st new mayor in 20 years

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) – Democrat City Treasurer Kathy Sheehan has won the race to replace longtime Albany incumbent Mayor Jerry Jennings, filling a post that has been occupied for two decades.

Unofficial results had Sheehan winning Tuesday against Republican Jesse Calhoun.

With Sheehan’s victory, Albany will get its first new mayor in 20 years – and its first female mayor in this heavily Democratic city.

Sheehan is a former corporate lawyer who became treasurer in 2010.

Calhoun is a pre-school teacher.

Also on the ballot was Green Party candidate Theresa Portelli and Conservative Joseph Sullivan.

Jennings was the third elected mayor since 1941.
