Northwood Prep hockey splits with Hitmen

The Northwood Prep hockey team traveled to Rhode Island last weekend and came away with a split of two games against the Rhode Island Hitmen.

After dropping the first game 4-2 on Saturday, the Huskies came back strong on Sunday to even the series with a 3-2 victory over the Hitmen.

Eli Klinsman was credited with the game-winning goal in the third period of Sunday’s game after Matt Headland and Jeremy Lerner connected on passes to set up the score.

Northwood goaltender Charl Pretorius was recognized as the player of the game Sunday after stopping 23 of the 25 shots he faced.

Bulat Khamidullin gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead 4:46 into the first period, with assists going to Ian Nathan and Christian Thomas. Rhode Island tied it up in the second period, but John Biscardi regained the lead on a pass from Sterling Bray.

In Saturday’s game, Rhode Island scored two goals in the final two minutes to secure the victory.

Lerner scored Northwood’s first goal on a pass from Headland. The Hitmen scored the next two for a 2-1 advantage going into the third.

Headland tied the game at 2-2 after crashing the net and receiving a pass from Janne Wuorenheimo. Rhode Island scored its third goal toward the end of the third period then added an empty netter to set the final score.

Bradley Stone manned the goal for Northwood.

The Northwood Prep team will face Hoosac School Wednesday at home in the Olympic Center at 2:15 p.m.


Northwood 2, Northfield Mount Hermon 1

The Northwood Junior Hockey Club traveled to Ashburnham, Mass. on Saturday to take on Northfield Mount Hermon, and the Huskies came away with a 2-1 victory.

Ryan Smith and Shane Kuzmeski accounted for the Huskies goals, while netminder Aidan Pelino stopped 21 of the 22 shots he faced.

The Northwood Juniors improved to 9-2 on the season with the win and will hit the road once again Friday to face the Springfield Junior Pics.


The Northwood girls hockey team had mixed results in its first league tournament of the year last weekend in Stanstead, Quebec.

The Huskies opened with a 2-0 victory over Rothesay-Netherwood School on Friday, then lost both their games Saturday – 2-1 to King’s Edgehill School and 4-2 against Stanstead School.

Northwood came back with a 3-3 tie Sunday against the Rice Knights.

Nicole Mensi scored both Northwood goals against Rothesay-Netherwood, while Megan Messuri earned the shutout in goal for the Huskies.

Mensi scored again in Saturday morning’s loss to King’s Edgehill, but it wasn’t enough as the Huskies suffered their second loss of the season.

Issy Ren scored her first goal as a Northwood player against Stanstead and Mensi accounted for the other in a 4-2 Huskies defeat.

Alyson Matteau, Nicki Clover and Cailey Hutchison each scored goals in the 3-3 tie against Rice in the weekend finale.
