Saranac Lake should try for electric district

To the editor:

It’s nice to hear that the governor is so supportive of the two hotel proposals here in Saranac Lake. In the long run, however, Saranac Lake is at a terrible disadvantage compared to Lake Placid: there is a municipal utility district in Placid, so residents and businesses pay a small fraction of what we here in Saranac Lake pay for electricity. The cost of business here, much of which is energy related, is not the sort of thing that encourages robust private investment. It’s time Saranac Lake looked into the possibility of creating its own municipal utility district.
