Saranac Lake ArtWorks presents holiday events

SARANAC LAKE – Saranac Lake ArtWorks has announced a slate of art events and opportunities for the holiday season. For more details visit the Saranac Lake ArtWorks web site:


Bluseed Studios, 24 Cedar St., will host the annual “Starving Artists Show & Sale,” with works by numerous local artists 518-891-3799.

The “BIG Little Show,” coordinated by members of the Adirondack Artists’ Guild, but on display at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts, also features many works, by local artists, that are all smaller than 64 square inches. Open from 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, as well as during events. 518-523-2512.

Friday, Dec. 6: Opening Friday are two new exhibits in downtown Saranac Lake. NorthWind Fine Arts Gallery, in their new location at 11 Woodruff St., will feature “Drifting into New Places… Winding Waters, Whimsical Woodlands,” mixed media and photography by Alice Vera. 518-354-1875. The Adirondack Artists Guild Gallery, at 52 Main St, will debut “Adirondack Christmas: Jewelry by Linda Gertsch”. 518-891-2615. Both receptions are from 5 to 7 p.m. and offer a variety of refreshments.

Friday, Dec. 6: Also the opening day of the annual Sparkle Village Arts & Crafts Fair, sponsored by the Saranac Lake Area Chamber of Commerce. New this year, there will be two locations: the Harrietstown Town Hall, 39 Main St. and the Adirondack Carousel on Depot St. One $2 admission price covers both locations and both days. The fair is open from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday Dec 6 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. 518-891-1990.

Saturday, Dec. 7: By mid-day there will be a new exhibit up at the Paul Smith’s College VIC. The “Winter Wonders Art Show” will feature winter themed works by photographers Karla Brieant, Mark Kurtz, and Eleanor Sweeney and paintings by Nancy Brossard, Sandra Hildreth and Edith Urban. The VIC will be open daily starting Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and this exhibit will run to Jan 29. 518-327-6241.

Special events for children

Saturday, Dec. 7: There will be a book-signing at the Adirondack Artists Guild Gallery, 52 Main St., from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Member Suzanne Langelier-Lebeda is the illustrator of “Green Golly & her Magic Flute,” a book that introduces children to classical music. She will be joined by Barbara Briggs Ward, the author, who has also written “The Snowman Maker” and “The Reindeer Keeper.” 518-891-2615.

Saturday, Dec. 14 -?”Breakfast with Santa” at the Adirondack Carousel on Depot Street. Registration is required and seating is limited. Children will join Santa from 9 to 10 a.m. for breakfast. Cost is $7 per person and includes breakfast, free rides, and a visit with Santa. 518-891-9521

Workshop, open houses

Edith Urban’s home gallery, 2305 county Route 60, Onchiota, will be open during the holidays with hand-crafted items and paintings. 518-891-5467.

Designer and pastel artist Diane Leifheit, who works out of her Point of View Studio at 815 state Route 86 in Gabriels, will have numerous open studio hours in December. 518-651-1938.

Saturday, Dec. 7: Mark Kurtz is inviting people to stop in at his studio/gallery up above the Adirondack Artists Guild, at 52 Main St. from noon to 5 p.m. Adirondack panoramas, Holga photos, prints and books will be available as well as refreshments. 518-891-2431.

Dec. 7 and Dec. 8: Sandra Hildreth is opening her home studio/gallery on both Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. She will have Adirondack landscapes and wildflower paintings on display with some at holiday reduced prices. The location is 182 Lake St. in Saranac Lake. 518-891-1388.

Saturday, Dec. 7: Bluseed Studios is hosting a Holiday Family Workshop to make a clay gingerbread house. Each family member can make their own special home for the “Gingerbread” family, or work on one together on a one-of-a-kind ginger-dream home. Two sessions of this class will run on Saturday, 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. Pre-registration is requested. Saturday, Dec. 14: Cris Winters will have her NICHE Studio open at 140 Breezy Acres Lane, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., other times by appt. Featured will be fiber, watercolor, and mixed media works. 518-524-0533
