Red Storm girls open with a win

SARANAC LAKE – The Saranac Lake girls basketball team started the season on a high note Tuesday with a 32-13 win over Tupper Lake.

The Red Storm took control of the game in the second quarter, outscoring the Lumberjacks 14-3.

“The second quarter we got away from them pretty good,” Saranac Lake coach Frank Johns said. “That’s when we opened up the lead, in the second quarter.”

Saranac Lake was then able to keep up the momentum in the third quarter when they held Tupper Lake scoreless. The Red Storm scored six points in the period.

Forward Katie Buckley led the Red Storm offense with 11 points, including one 3-pointer. She shot a stellar 45 percent from the field.

Teammate Jennie Ward, a guard-forward, had a strong all-around game with eight points, seven rebounds and six steals. So did Selena Baillargeon, who had four points, four rebounds and two steals.

On defense, the Red Storm were led by speedy guard Katie Hewitt who had five steals to go with four points.

“She’s very fast,” Johns said. “That girl will steal your pocket if you don’t watch it.”

For Tupper Lake, Katie Zurek had a strong game with seven points to lead the Lumberjacks.

The two teams meet again on Monday when Saranac Lake (1-0) travels to Tupper Lake (0-1) for a 6 p.m. matchup.
