Voluntary Health Association announces scholarship winners

The Saranac Lake Voluntary Health Association congratulates the recipients of its annual scholarships given to second year North Country Community College students in the Registered Nurse and Radiology Tech Programs.

For the 2013-2014 year the recipients are Brandie Lincoln, Christopher Hoerner, Jennie Frenette, William Schneider III and Andrew James of Saranac Lake; Miranda Ward of Wilmington and Margaret Maher of Lake Placid. Each student was awarded $2,000 to assist with college expenses.

“We particularly target the nontraditional students at North County Community College,” said SLVHA Board Member Sue Patterson. “Those students have stronger ties to this community. We are looking to help build the work force in the Saranac Lake area.”

According to Patterson there are many careers available to someone with a degree in nursing. She agrees that not every student will want to head directly into the hospital workforce. There are numerous other jobs including school nurse, group home, home care nursing and more. The healthcare industry is a rewarding career with a variety of possibilities and Patterson and the Saranac Lake Voluntary Health Association want to continue to support those completing their careers.

Each year, scholarships are awarded to second year NCCC registered nurse or radiology tech students that are residents of Essex, Franklin or Hamilton Counties. Each winning applicant had to submit a brief essay as well as be in good academic standing and two letters of recommendation.

The Saranac Lake Voluntary Health Association Inc. is a not-for-profit organization established in 1897 and dedicated to improving the health of the people within the Saranac Lake Central School District through funding healthcare initiatives and scholarships for students in the medical, nursing, rehabilitative and allied fields of study.
