Northwood boys, girls on hockey roll
LAKE PLACID – The Northwood School girls hockey team held three opponents scoreless while burying 18 pucks during three home victories over the weekend.
The matchups were part of the Candian Hockey Enterprises tournament held at the Olympic Center. Northwood picked up two wins over the Lakewood College School of Toronto by scores of 2-0 and 8-0 and wrapped up the weekend with an 8-0 blanking of Olympiennes de L’Odyssee, a team from Moncton, New Brunswick.
Northwood topped Lakewood 2-0 Friday in a game that saw Cailey Hutchinson score in the second period and Nicole Mensi netted an insurance goal in the third.
The teams squared off a second time Saturday morning, and Hutchinson and Mensi again led the way. Mensi netted a hat trick and Hutchinson buried two shots. Nicki Clover and Eva Marques each chipped in one goal in the win.
Issy Ren’s hat trick paced Northwood in Sunday’s win over Olympiennes de L’Odyssee. Maci Hoskins scored twice and Mensi, Hutchinson and Bridgit Sullivan netted a goal apiece.
Northwood’s girls next play in the annual E.G. Watkins tournament at Cushing Academy and will then have a holiday break.
Huskies prep sweeps CADO
The Northwood School boys prep hockey team rolled to a pair of victories against the CADO Chiefs in games played Saturday and Sunday. In the first meeting, which was played Saturday at the Saranac Lake Civic Center, the Huskies gave up an early goal but roared back to claim a 5-2 win. Then on Sunday, Northwood fired up the offense on the way to 13-0 blanking of the squad from Gatineau, Que.
In Sunday’s matchup played at the Olympic Center in Lake Placid, the Huskies came through with a huge second period, putting eight pucks in the net on 12 shots during the stanza to pull away.
Eight different players found the back of the net for the Huskies, who improved to 10-8-3 with the win. Justin Felhaber had a big scoring game for Northwood, netting a hat trick and adding an assist.
Sterling Bray scored twice and had a pair of assists, Brendan Murphy had a goal and two assists and Guiliano Dirissio, Lucas Samuelsson and Matt Headland netted a goal each.
Also for Northwood; John Biscardi notched four assists, Eli Kinsman had three assists, Eddie Accetta chipped in two assists and Yuki Irie, Chris Hearty and Josh Grievson each set up one goal.
Jeff Hextall made 14 saves to earn the shutout win in the Huskies nets. Northwood put 35 shots on goal during the game.
Sameulsson paced the Huskies in Satuday’s win with a pair of goals, and Headland, Dirissio and Christian Loshe added single tallies.
Bradley Stone earned the win in nets, stopping 20 of 23 shots on goal. The Huskies put 46 shots on net in the game.
Northwood’s prep team next competes Friday and Saturday at a tournament in Groton, Mass.
