Man injured after fall down elevator shaft
SARANAC LAKE – A man was taken to the hospital Sunday after he fell down the elevator shaft at the DeChantal Apartments high-rise, firefighters said.
The Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department initially responded to the 11-story apartment building at 2:54 p.m. for a report of a person stuck in an elevator. The elevator stopped working when the building lost power due to a power outage on Helen Hill, according to Head Fire Driver Rick Yorkey.
He said firefighters got the person out of the elevator. Several members also responded next door to the Verizon building, 48 Church St., for an alarm activation that firefighters also believe was triggered by the power outage. No action was needed.
At 5:12 p.m., firefighters were dispatched back to the DeChantal to help a person who had fallen down the elevator shaft. Yorkey said a man had been working on the elevator door on the first floor when he apparently fell 4 feet down the elevator shaft.
He suffered arm and leg injuries and was transported to Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake by the Saranac Lake Volunteer Rescue Squad.
Firefighters were back in service at 5:25 p.m.
