Police say man stole truck, then crashed it

SARANAC LAKE – A one-vehicle crash resulted in a felony arrest on Saturday.

Tupper Lake-based state police said they responded to the accident on state Route 3 near the Second Pond boat launch at 4:40 a.m. and discovered a 2006 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck was on its roof, in a ditch and off the road.

Police said further investigation revealed that the vehicle’s operator, 31-year-old Todd E. King Jr., had stolen the truck from a Lake Placid residence and was driving it to his Tupper Lake residence when he lost control of it and crashed.

The Saranac Lake Volunteer Rescue Squad took King to Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake for an evaluation, in which it was determined he did did not suffer any injuries, police said.

While at the hospital, King submitted to a blood test to determine his blood alcohol content.

King was charged with fourth-degree grand larceny, a felony, and driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor. He was also issued a ticket for failure to maintain lane. Further charges may be pending the results of the blood test.

King was arraigned in North Elba town court for the felony charge. He was released on his own recognizance and ordered to appear at 6 p.m. today. He was also ordered to appear at the Harrietstown town court at 10 a.m. Jan. 22 for the DWI charge.

State police were assisted in their investigation by the Lake Placid Police Department.
