Mountain Club to host Winterfest Saturday
LAKE PLACID – The Adirondack Mountain Club will host its first-ever Winterfest on Saturday at the Adirondak Loj property.
This free event is part of National Winter Trails Day and will feature many forms of winter recreation.
“We just figured it would be a great way to have sort of a family-friendly community open house,” ADK Deputy Executive Director John Million said. “(We want to) show folks who are either visiting or, more importantly even, locally, all the great things that you can do outside in the winter.”
ADK already hosts events for National Trails Day in June and Fall Trails Day in September. Million said the idea to host a winter event came from one of the volunteers.
“It started as a seed of an idea, and it blossomed from there,” Million said.
Unlike other trail days, there won’t be any maintenance work done because of the winter conditions. The idea is more to get people out enjoying themselves.
This event will feature telemark ski lessons, ski waxing clinics, Nordic ski workshops, guided snowshoe hikes, ice skating, curling, a kids’ activity area and a family scavenger hunt.
There will also be opportunities to try out gear, including skis and snowshoes. Local retailers and national gear vendors will have tents with equipment.
This event begins at 10 a.m. and continues until 8 p.m.
There will be a live band and a buffet dinner served in a heated tent.
Winter Trails Day is a nationwide event that encourages children and adults to try snowshoeing and cross-country skiing for free. About 11,000 participants in 100 locations will get out on the snow this year on Saturday in the 19th annual Winter Trails Day event, according to ADK.
