Lake Placid skates past Chiefs
LAKE PLACID – The Lake Placid boys hockey team used four first-period goals and a decisive shooting advantage to secure a 7-1 Champlain Valley Athletic Conference victory over Saranac on Wednesday.
Connor Preston scored two of his four goals in the first period, while teammates Noah Mohr and Elias Smith each had one as the Blue Bombers raced out to a 4-0 lead after one.
Preston scored three goals goals on the night and Smith finished with two goals and an assist. Troy Jacques added a goal and two assists for the Blue Bombers, who outshot Saranac 47-12.
Tucker Angelopoulos, Kamm Cassidy and Lewis Collum combined for 11 saves in goal for Lake Placid. Jeff Smith tended the net for the Chiefs and finished with 40 saves.
Saranac’s lone goal came eight minutes into the second period when Danny Bridgeman found the back of the net.
Lake Placid (4-0 CVAC, 9-1 overall) returns to action Wednesday at home against Beekmantown.
Saranac Lake 3, Northeastern Clinton 1
SARANAC LAKE – The Saranac Lake boys hockey team fell behind early but stormed back in the second and third to grab a 3-1 Champlain Valley Athletic Conference victory over Northeastern Clinton on Wednesday.
Northeastern Clinton took a 1-0 lead 10 minutes into the first when Cameron Hurlburt broke through with a power-play goal.
Saranac Lake sophomore Evan Hill scored his first varsity goal to tie the game at the 4:27 mark of the second, and from there it was all Red Storm. Blake Battistoni connected at 7:47 of the third with assists going to Bradley Shumway and David Cluckey and Chris Spicer extended the lead to 3-1 with a short-handed goal at 12:47 of the third.
Saranac Lake outshot the Cougars 23-16. Blake Darrah stopped 15 shots for the Red Storm (3-6-1).
Canton 5, Lake Placid 1
CANTON – The Canton girls hockey team racked up four goals in the third period to wrap up a 5-1 victory over Lake Placid on Wednesday.
Canton’s Margaret Troiano scored her first of three goals in the second period as the Golden Bears took a 1-0 lead into the third.
Canton netted two more goals early in the third to take control of the game, but Lake Placid answered at the 13:07 mark when Payton Barney found Sam Barney for the Blue Bombers’ lone tally.
Troiano scored two more late in the third to set the final score.
Tanner Stanton made 25 saves in goal for the Blue Bombers, who were outshot 30-25. Elizabeth Burke stopped 24 shots for Canton.
Lake Placid 49, Willsboro 27
WILLSBORO – The Lake Placid girls basketball team set the tone early and never looked back Wednesday on the way to a convincing 49-27 victory over Willsboro.
It was the third win in a row for the Blue Bombers, who raced out to a 12-0 lead after the first quarter then extended the lead with a 20-3 third.
“It was a great team effort on both ends of the floor for us again,” said Lake Placid coach Jeff Potter. “Our team has been playing tremendous team basketball the past six games.”
Adele Jesmer hit three 3-pointers and led the Blue Bombers in scoring with 15 points. Jesmer and Chloe Uebrick combined for 16 of Lake Placid’s 20 points in the third quarter.
Uebrick finished with 11 points, while Hanna Potter collected 13 rebounds, seven assists and four blocked shots. Erin Weaver chipped in seven rebounds and three assists.
Willsboro’s Andrea O’Hara led all scorers with 16 points.
Lake Placid returns to action Friday at Elizabethtown.
Peru 62, Saranac Lake 22
SARANAC LAKE – The Peru boys basketball team shut out Saranac Lake in the first quarter on the way to a 62-22 victory Wednesday night.
The Indians took a 24-3 advantage into the locker room at halftime.
Devin Cowan led the way for the Red Storm with 10 points, nine of which came on 3-pointers.
Peru’s Tyler Lemza led all scorers with 14 points.
