Village Democratic caucus set for Wednesday

SARANAC LAKE – This village’s Democrats may consider a party member’s suggestion to cross-endorse a Conservative Party candidate when they meet Wednesday night to choose their party’s candidates for the March 18 election.

The caucus will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the village offices on the second floor of the Harrietstown Town Hall, 39 Main St., village Trustee Paul Van Cott, a Democrat, announced Saturday. Van Cott will lead the caucus; the village Democrats currently don’t have a committee chair.

The mayor and two trustee terms, four years each, are up for election. The men who hold those posts now are all seeking re-election: Mayor Clyde Rabideau and Trustee Tom Catillaz, both Democrats, and Conservative Trustee Elias “Allie” Pelletieri.

Van Cott, in his press release, noted that local Democrat Rich Shapiro, in a post on Rabideau’s Facebook page, recommended that the Democrats endorse Pelletieri as well as Rabideau and Catillaz.

“If Allie wants to join Clyde and Tom on the Democratic line, I am sure he will have a lot of support” Van Cott said. “While political parties tend to frown on cross-endorsements, at the local level, most folks I talk to think our job should be electing candidates who will do the most for Saranac Lake over the next four years.”

Nevertheless, Van Cott added, “We encourage anyone to step forward; it is an exciting time for Saranac Lake.”

Any Saranac Laker is welcome to attend the Democratic caucus, although only registered Democrats who live in the village may nominate or vote for candidates.

After the caucus, those attending are invited to join in a celebration at the DownHill Grill. Rabideau has offered to provide some light appetizers.
