Hoping McKay found peace
To the editor:
I was one of the hardy souls who stood on Main Street at 7:30 a.m. this morning (Thursday, Jan. 23) to honor the young Australian soldier, Capt. Paul McKay, as his body was escorted out of town for the trip back to his home country.
I love the peace and solitude found in our wild forests, lakes, and mountains. To me, there is nothing better than spending a day getting to a secluded pond or a summit with a wonderful view. To be able to just sit, alone with my thoughts, and appreciate nature is a relaxing and meditative experience.
No one knows what demons were tormenting Paul McKay, but I hope he found peace up on Scarface Mountain. I hope he sat on that rocky ledge and looked at the stars, perhaps reminded of the Southern Cross that would have been visible from his homeland as he lay down and closed his eyes. He’ll be in my thoughts the next time I hike up Scarface.
