Winter Carnival snowshoe racers tromp through fresh snow
SARANAC LAKE – Participants in the annual Saranac Lake Winter Carnival snowshoe race at Dewey Mountain were greeted with a fresh layer of new snow Wednesday.
Racers of all ages showed up, with classes for all age groups. The youngest winner of the day was Alexis Sinclair, who competed in the 4- to 6-year-old class. She finished a quarter-mile race in 1 minute, 29 seconds to beat out Sadi Martin, who finished in 1:38.
In one of the more competitive races of the night, Paul Smith’s College alumni Eric Kowalik finished first in 12:31. He beat out five other participants.
“It was a lot of fun. I really enjoyed it,” Kowalik said afterward. “(The snow) made (the races) better and, of course, a lot more enjoyable. A lot more pretty.”
Steve Doxzon, owner of Adirondack Lakes and Trails which manages Dewey Mountain, said the races went off smoothly.
“Considering the road conditions and the driving conditions, it was a good turnout and it was a lot of fun,” Doxzon said. “Good course, and we had plenty of snow.”
