Democrat chairs to pick candidate soon
The Democratic county chairs of New York’s 21st Congressional District plan to make an announcement sometime within the next 10 days on their candidate to replace retiring Congressman Bill Owens.
They said in a statement that they received expressions of interest from several potential candidates; they didn’t say how many or whom they are. The candidates will be invited to interview with the chairs soon, and a decision is expected shortly afterward.
“We were pleased to hear from so many thoughtful, intelligent individuals who have expressed a tremendous interest in the district and commitment to the citizens of NY 21,” Washington County party Chairwoman Sheila Comar wrote in a press release.
The open interview process Democrats are using is similar to one used in 2009, when the district was called 23rd and when Owens was selected.
“The North Country has a long history of quality representation in Congress,” Comar said. “We plan to continue that.”
