Lake Placid captures tourney title

LAKE PLACID – The Lake Placid boys hockey team knocked off rival Saranac Lake on Friday in the semifinals then downed Middlebury on Saturday to capture the championship of its Winter Carnival Tournament.

The Blue Bombers, ranked No. 7 in the state, scored a goal in the first period and another in the third Friday to secure a 2-0 victory over Saranac Lake. Connor Preston accounted for the first goal at the 7:16 mark of the first and Chris Williams connected at 3:40 of the third period.

Saranac Lake goaltender Blake Darrah played an extraordinary game in net, turning away 39 of the 41 shots he faced. The Bombers held a 41-11 shooting advantage throughout the game.

Kamm Cassidy earned the shutout in goal for Lake Placid.

Friday’s game also counted toward the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference standings. The Blue Bombers sit atop the conference with an undefeated league record.

Lake Placid returned to action Saturday with a 4-2 victory over Middlebury for the tournament championship.

The Blue Bombers raced out to a 3-1 lead after the first period and added another early in the second. Middlebury scored at 2:26 of the third, but it was too little too late as the Blue Bombers held on for the win.

Troy Jacques, Noah Mohr and Dillon Savage each scored in the first period. Shane McNierney scored Lake Placid’s fourth goal 54 seconds into the second period.

McNierney was named as the most valuable player of the tournament.

Lake Placid outshot Middlebury 26-18. Tucker Angelopoulos made 16 saves for the Blue Bombers.
