Kushaqua comment period extended

RAY BROOK – A public comment period on the Kushaqua Tract conservation easement’s recreation management plan has been extended until March 28, the state Department of Environmental Conservation announced recently.

DEC extended the comment period in response to stakeholders seeking additional time to review the plan and provide comments. The original deadline had been Feb. 21.

The plan includes proposals to construct campsites, designated parking areas and new trails for motorized and non-motorized users.

The DEC plans to provide access for people with disabilities, to enhance fishing access and to repair, upgrade and open to the public more than 38 miles of existing access roads for non-motorized and motorized use, including by ATVs, snowmobiles and automobiles.

The plan is available for public review at DEC’s Region 5 headquarters in Ray Brook and at the Brighton and Franklin town halls in Paul Smiths and Vermontville, respectively. Copies are also available on compact disc and may be requested by calling DEC at 518-897-1291. A limited number of printed copies are available as well. The complete document is available on DEC’s website at www.dec.ny.gov/lands/94963.html.
