Saranac Lake MathCounts team takes top honors

SARANAC LAKE – The Saranac Lake MathCounts team took first place overall during the recent February 1st competition. The Saranac Lake team, consisting of Max Campbell, Devan Kidd, Bruno Freeman, Colten Clement, Kevin Garcia and Abby Wolff met weekly to enrich math skills and prepare for the annual championship.

The three-hour annual contest held at the Clinton Community College Arts and Science building in Plattsburgh consisted of a 40-min. individual round, four short 6-min rounds and a team round. The competition showcased students’ skills in algebra, probability, statistics and geometry. This was the sixth year that Saranac Lake provided a team to the MathCounts competition.

The five schools participating in this year’s regional competition were Saranac Lake Middle School, Saranac Lake; Seton Academy, Plattsburgh; Stafford Middle School, Plattsburgh; Chazy Rural School, and Peru Middle School.

MathCounts is a national math enrichment, coaching and competition program that promotes success through middle school mathematics achievement. There are more than 500 Chapter Competitions, 57 State Competitions and one National Competition held each year. Since 1984, MathCounts helps promote mathematical development through problem solving, analytical thinking, reasoning and teamwork.

Eighth grader Max Campbell encourages students to be part of MathCounts. “Join MathCounts even if you don’t feel you have great math skills,” says Campbell. “It teaches you great ways of thinking.”

“I’m excited about the high level of interest among the current 6th and 7th graders in joining next year’s MATHCOUNTS team. Coaching MATHCOUNTS enables me to go beyond the Common Core and help students think about problem solving in different ways,” says Coach Tyler Chase. “I’d like to thank Adirondack By Owner for providing pizza as an acknowledgement of all the team’s hard work.”

After 25 years, this is the last year that Chapter President Wayne Ryan of AES Northeast will spearhead the local MathCounts competition. The event will continue to be facilitated by The Champlain Valley Chapter of the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE).

The Saranac Lake team will continue to the state match on March 15 at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, with the hopes of proceeding to the Raytheon MathCounts National Competition in Orlando, Fla on May 9.
