Bobcats snowshoers excel at nationals

The Paul Smith’s College women’s snowshoe team defended their national relay title and Chloe Mattilio earned a spot on the U.S. national team last weekend at the US Snowshoe Nationals held at Prospect Mountain Ski Center in Woodford, Vt.

Mattilio, a freshman from Lancaster, Pa., finished third overall in the 5-kilometer race with a time of 26 minutes, 31 seconds. Teammate Lauren Brieant wasn’t far behind with a time of 33:11 and Sarah Butler came in at 33:12.

The Paul Smith’s women were awarded the overall 5k team title for their strong finishes. Jeanette Cudney of Cazenovia was the 5k winner in 26:03, followed by Rachel Jones of Rochester in 26:24. The top three were awarded spots on the U.S. national team, which will compete in Eau Claire, Wisc., at the 2015 US Nationals.

Brieant and Butler were also part of the Paul Smith’s 4×2.5k relay team that captured the national title for the second year in a row. They were joined by Lea Anthony and Corrie Desilets, registering a time of 1:16:02 for the top prize.

Anthony and Desilets were also part of last year’s women’s relay team that won the national title.

The Bobcats also took the top spot in the mixed relay, with Mattilio teaming up with Ashley Evans, Nik Pendl and Louis Ferrone III to complete the 10k course in 58:11.

Paul Smith’s snowshoers Jack Mulvihill, Alan Cushman, David Kucia and Matt Williams placed second in the mixed age men’s relay with a time of 52:43.

In the men’s 5k individual event, Paul Smith’s was led by Pendl, who placed fourth in 22:59, just out of the national team qualifiers. Mitchell Ryan of Plattsburgh won the race in 21:53, Carter Stripp of Massachusetts was second in 22:24 and Zach Marshall was third in 22:25.

The Bobcats had 12 athletes competing in the 10k races. On the women’s side, Evans placed fourth in 1:14:45, Anthony was fifth in 1:17:19 and Desilets was sixth in 1:22:48 out of the 114 total competitors.

Alan Cushman was the top Paul Smith’s men’s 10k finisher with 59th-place result in 55:01. Ferrone crossed the line in 55:06 for 60th place. David LePorho of Canada won the race in 41:51.

Paul Smith’s also had strong showings in the Sap Run, which is a snowshoe hill climb. Alan Cushman finished first, David Kucia was second and Matt Williams was third for PSC in the men’s event. Evans won the women’s event, followed by Mattilio in second. All five took home a prize of maple syrup for their podium finishes.
