Success with smaller portions

As a restaurant owner, it is uncommon to be approached by an organization offering support and reward for better serving the community. The Fit Pix Program from the Healthy Heart Network, a Saranac Lake-based nonprofit, has done just that.

We first heard about the program through a Saranac Lake Rotary presentation. Director Margot Gold intricately presented the concept, technical assistances and incentives of the program. It sparked our interest. Soon after, we began working with Brittany Harris, whose background in locally sourced products and knowledge of children’s nutrition facilitated our reform. Together, we identified the current healthy items on the menu, created new offerings and reduced portions where we could.

We are excited to report that our Reduced Portion Options are selling better than their full-sized counterparts on the menu. Kids are ordering milk and juice more often than soda, and some are opting for grilled chicken strips instead of the usual fried “chicken tenders.” We are proud to be one of the first restaurants in the state to adopt such a program. Hopefully, as more restaurants reform, the Fit Pix Program can create a platform and open the dialogue about what our children are offered at the restaurant level.

With issues like obesity and diabetes plaguing the country, it is refreshing to work with a local organization mobilizing local businesses to help prevent these issues in our own community. A big “THANK YOU” to the Healthy Heart Network for helping Nonna Fina become part of the solution.
