Spring is in the air at NorthWind Fine Arts

SARANAC LAKE – The members of the NorthWind Fine Arts gallery are celebrating the first day of spring with art.

It isn’t just one kind of art, either. The show will feature eleven artists in an eclectic exhibition of mediums that include photography, ornamental blacksmithing, collage, mixed media, fabric, woodcarving, and oil, acrylic and watercolor paintings.

Each piece has a spring theme, like the colorful “Hares of Spring” painting by Cat Micheels, which has imagery of the four seasons centered around three snowshoe hares, each with a different color coat, chasing each other in a circle.

Other works have titles like “Winter Thaw,” “Growin’ in the Chapel” and “Spring Glimpses.”

NorthWind member and woodcarver Rachel Lamb said her piece, “Daffodil,” was originally on display at last year’s Daffest. A sure sign of spring, it is a bright yellow portrait of a daffodil carved into basswood.

Lamb said all of the artists whose work is on display live in the region.

“Everybody is local,” said Lamb. “The furthest away is Plattsburgh, we have two members from there. We also have artists from Bloomingdale, Saranac Lake, Lake Clear and Paul Smith’s.”

Current members of the gallery are Lamb, Heidi Gutersloh, Shawn L. Halperin, Cathy and Russ Hartung, Rachel Lamb, Cat Micheels, Catharine Hayes Moore, Lee Ann Sporn, Alice Vera, Cris Winters and David Woodward.

NorthWind Fine Arts Gallery is currently accepting new members. Anyone interested should pick up an application at the gallery and send it in with a letter of intent and a few images.

The “First Day of Spring Art Exhibit” runs from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at NorthWind Fine Arts, located at 11 Woodruff St. in Saranac Lake.
