Parents invited to forum on drug abuse trends

SARANAC LAKE – Village and state police will talk about a spike in drug abuse in the area at a special forum for parents and community residents Thursday at the Saranac Lake High School.

The informational meeting will take place from 4 to 5 p.m. in the high school’s large group instructional room, accessible via door number 13 in the upper parking lot.

The meeting will be led by state police Senior Investigator Samuel Mercado Jr. and the Saranac Lake Police Department.

The parent/community meeting will follow a school-wide assembly for students and staff earlier in the day, high school Principal Josh Dann wrote in a letter sent home to parents. He said the presentation will focus on the recent increase of heroin abuse and the misuse of prescription narcotic drugs, new drugs that are targeted at young people, the dangers associated with these drugs, and identifying signs and symptoms associated with drug abuse.
