Cook’s A reverses the curse

SARANAC LAKE – The curse has been broken.

On Thursday, the Captain Cook’s A team finally ended the Saranac Lake pool league championship run of its rival Cook’s B. After falling to Cook’s B in the best-of-five championship series the past three years in a row, Captain Cook’s A completed a three-game sweep to claim the 2014 title.

Although many of the players in the Saranac Lake pool league have jumped from team to team during recent seasons, a number of members on this year’s Cook’s B squad have competed together for years. Included in that group are Mark Stevens and Brian Mott, who for the past nine years, have reached the championship series only to settle for runner-up.

“It’s about time,” Stevens exclaimed just after teammate Alan Swentusky sank the winning eight-ball shot. “It’s pretty tiring coming this far year after year just to lose. This is great. I couldn’t be happier.”

Cook’s A finished in third place during the regular season. Cook’s B took that title and MC Motors was the runnner-up.

Cook’s A just slipped by their rival in the first game of the championship series, winning 11-10, but then took the next two contests 10-6 and 10-5. On Thursday, Cook’s A went on a roll, winning the final six games of the match.
