Pack your Enterprise

This year of all years, you’re less likely to be caught saying, “What, spring break already?” With a long, stubborn winter and a late break, people are more than ready to get out of town, preferably in a southerly direction.

Saranac Lake and Lake Placid schools will be closed for the next two weeks, starting April 14 with students returning on the 28th. The Tupper Lake, Keene and AuSable Valley schools will get that first week off, having already had a winter break in February. Keene and AuSable Valley also have no school Monday, April 21.

While many Tri-Lakers do take vacations during that time, most don’t. In our Web poll this week, as of Tuesday evening more than three-quarters of the voters said they were not leaving town. Granted, it’s an unscientific straw poll, but we think it’s fairly accurate.

Nevertheless, if you are gearing up to leave, we send you off with our warmest wishes and this reminder: Be sure you pack an issue of the Enterprise in your luggage, along with your camera.

Then put that paper to good use. At some fun moment of your vacation, have a picture taken of you displaying it. The photo could be a selfie, or someone else could wield the camera. Make sure it’s in an interesting setting so viewers can tell you really went somewhere.

Then, please submit it to the Enterprise Vacation Photo Contest, an annual Tri-Lakes tradition for more than 20 years. We and your fellow readers are aching with curiosity to see where you went, and we love seeing you on location – posing, naturally, with a copy of the Enterprise. In May and June we’ll print as many photos as possible in the paper – a dose of summer sun in mud and blackfly season.

It doesn’t have to be a spring break photo; you’re welcome to submit photos from other vacations, as long as the Enterprise is in them. In fact, we’ve already received a few entries from roving readers.

As always, we will give away prizes for the top three entries, as judged by our staff, based on originality, locale and photo quality. Those winning pictures will be the first ones we publish.

OK, here are the guidelines:

The deadline for us to receive photo entries will be Sunday, May 11 – Mother’s Day.

If your photos are digital, email them to our sports and features editor, Morgan Ryan, at Keep in mind that we can’t print low-resolution photos, so please don’t compress them. Before you start shooting, it’s a good idea to make sure your camera is set to take large photos – maybe not the largest possible, but fairly big.

If you only have your photo in a hard copy, either drop it off at our office (54 Broadway, Saranac Lake) or mail it to Vacation Photo Contest, Adirondack Daily Enterprise, P.O. Box 318, Saranac Lake, NY 12983.

If you want your hard copy returned, include a stamped, self-addressed envelope with your entry, and we will mail it back to you when we’re done.

Include your name, phone number and a caption – a brief description of who and what are in the photo, including the location and the name and hometown of any person pictured.

We ask that each household submit no more than one photo.

We’ll publish the photos in print only, not online. That’s one more reason to renew your subscription or, if you live far away, to get a relative or friend to buy the papers for you.

We hope all your vacations are safe and fun. We can’t wait to see them.
