Lake Placid softball holds on for first win
ELLENBURG – The Lake Placid softball team turned eight hits into 17 runs Tuesday on the way to a convincing 17-6 victory over Northern Adirondack.
The Blue Bombers poured it on in the final two innings with eight runs in the sixth and four more in the seventh. After Lake Placid jumped out to a 5-1 lead through three innings, NAC posted four in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game.
Lake Placid junior Gillian McLean collected three singles to pace the Blue Bombers offensively. Another junior Carissa Kennedy went the distance in the pitcher’s circle, allowing eight hits.
The Bobcats were hampered by seven fielding errors. Olivia Barnaby, Jillian Scott and Magan Magee each had two hits for NAC.
Lake Placid, which was coming off an 11-3 loss on Monday, will be back in action Thursday with a doubleheader at home against AuSable Valley.

TUPPER LAKE – The Tupper Lake softball team’s season-opening game against Norwood-Norfolk was called after four innings due to inclement weather. No make-up date has been announced.

LAKE PLACID – The Lake Placid boys and girls track and field teams got the season off to a strong start Tuesday with dual meet victories over AuSable Valley.
Nzoni Thompson won all four of the events he entered to lead the boys team to a 75-50 win. The Lake Placid junior came out on top in the 200 and 400, then teamed up to grab wins in the 400 and 1,600-meter relays.
Thompson finished the 400 in 57.7 seconds and the 200 in 25.5. He was joined by Connor Garrett, Scott Rossi and Andrew Baird to finish the 400 relay in 49.4. Curtis Rissberger, Henry McGrew, Andrew Meister and Thompson finished the 1,600 relay in 4:58.
Rossi, Stuart Baird and Rissberger were each three-time winners Tuesday.
On the girls’ side, Gabby Armstrong, Nina Armstrong, Esther Munoz and Kylie Kroes won three events apiece in the 79-53 team victory.
Munoz excelled in the field events, capturing the triple jump with a jump of 28 feet, 8 inches and the long jump with a 13-9. The sophomore also took first place in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:31.
Nina Armstrong, a junior, won the 1,500 in 5:36, the 3,000 in 12:19 and joined the 3,200 relay team for an 11:47 finish.
Gabby Armstrong, a freshman, took part in the 1,660 relay team that finished in 5:21. Individually, she won the 400 in 1:07 and the high jump with a 4-1.
Kroes was part of both of the winning relay teams as well as the winner of the 800 with a time of 3:00.
Tupper Lake 4 1/2, Norwood-Norfolk 1/2
MASSENA – The Tupper Lake golf team got off to a strong start Monday with a 4 1/2-1/2 win over Norwood Norfolk at the Raymondville Golf Course.
The Lumberjacks top golfer Riley Amell led the way with a score of 41. He was one of four Lumberjacks to win on the day. No. 2 golfer Josh Pickering (44), No. 4 Tyler Clark and No. 5 Ben Geiger (49) were also victorious. Alex Lewis tied his opponent after shooting a 52.
Several other Lumberjacks had strong days, although they weren’t competing. Liam LaMere shot a 46, Nick Dukette got a 49, Hayden Poirier scored a 54 and Megan Pickering finished with a 56.
