Bombers softball claims tournament title

LAKE PLACID – In order to get in a couple more games this spring, the Lake Placid softball team hosted an early-season tournament on Saturday.

Not only did the Blue Bombers have the opportunity to play two more matchups, they walked away with a title. In two games played, Lake Placid combined to outscore its opponents 15-3 and knocked off a pair of Champlain Valley Athletic Conference foes in the process.

The Blue Bombers posted a 7-1 victory over Saranac Central in the opening round and then topped Plattsburgh 8-2 to claim the championship.

Cheyenne Blair came up big in the final when she belted a grand slam in the third inning to lift Lake Placid to a 7-0 lead. The Hornets scored twice in the fifth to cut their deficit to 7-2, but the Blue Bombers tacked on one more run in the bottom of the frame to secure the win.

Carissa Kennedy pitched a complete game in the final for the Blue Bombers, who outhit the Hornets 8-6. Liz Bimonte paced Lake Placid at the plate with three singles and Adelle Jesmer added a triple.

The Hornets topped Massena 7-4 to reach the final.

In their opener, the Blue Bombers generated some late-game heroics to top the Chiefs. After failing to push any runners across the plate during the first six innings, the Blue Bombers rallied from a 1-0 deficit by scoring all their runs in their final at-bat.

Playing as the visiting team, Lake Placid turned a walk and six hits into seven runs in the top of the seventh inning to claim the victory.

Kennedy went the distance to earn the win, and helped her own cause at the plate with a double and single. Hanna Potter had a triple and single for the winners, while Bimonte, Blair and Payton Barney chipped in with two hits each.

After falling to the Blue Bombers, the Chiefs went on to edge Massena 3-2 in the consolation game.

Lake Placid will be in action again today, hosting Ticonderoga starting a 4:30 p.m.
