Lake Placid lake ice is out

LAKE PLACID – Ice Meisters Ben, Marty and Mary Shubert, along with Brian Bliss, declared Lake Placid ice officially out Friday, May 2 at 1:42 p.m., as they could navigate around the lake and through the straights.

The winners of the Lake Placid lake Ice Out contest, a fundraiser for the Lake Placid Volunteer Ambulance Service, were John Lansing, 27 minutes off; Jerry Blair, 32 minutes off; and a three-way tie for third: Kevin Geesler, Olga Krone and Linda Warner, all 42 minutes off.

Mirror Lake’s ice went out on April 26 at 4:55 p.m., as determined by Ice Meister Jack Irvin. Winners were Caroline Roy, 2 minutes off; Lisa Weibrecht, 5 minutes off; Mary Liz Alexander, 10 minutes off; Barbara Boatman, 1 hour and 5 minutes off; and Linda Warner, 1 hour and 35 minutes off.

Just over 530 tickets were sold for ambulance service’s 23rd annual Ice Out Benefit. With recent contributions and this fundraiser, plans for demolition of the 1976 garage and building of a new entranceway are moving ahead.
