Search on for student missing in Grasse River

CLARE (AP) – Authorities are searching for the body of a college student believed to have drowned while swimming in a remote northern New York river.

The St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office tells the Watertown Daily Times that the 20-year-old man from the State University of New York at Canton was swimming Sunday with friends at the Grasse River Recreation Area in the town of Clare.

Officials say the man’s friends lost sight of him at Lampson Falls and called police. A search was launched but had to be halted when it got too dark. Dive teams returned to the river this morning.

Police say the man was a student at SUNY Canton, but they aren’t releasing his name yet.

Clare is located between Colton and Star Lake in the western Adirondacks.
