Saranac Lake golf hands Peru first loss

RAY BROOK – The Saranac Lake golf team notched its sixth win in a row Monday to stay perfect in the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference. But unlike the previous matches this season, the Red Storm found themselves in a close contest against another undefeated opponent.

Playing on their home course, all six Saranac Lake golfers turned in rounds of 43 or lower to claim a 4.5-1.5 victoy over Peru.

Ethan Sawyer led Saranac Lake. Playing in the top spot in the lineup, the junior shot a medalist round of 37 to win by three strokes in a well-played match with Peru’s top golfer, Jordan Guay. Sawyer improved to 6-0 in individual play with Monday’s win.

Austin Ecret, Tanner Courcelle and Danny Strack also won for Saranac Lake. Matt Nugent grabbed Peru’s lone victory, and Carley Sawyer of the Red Storm and Gavin Plimpton of Peru finished tied to earn a half point each.

In the No. 2 matchup, Nugent handed Red Storm senior Dustin Fischer his first loss of the season. Over the final three holes, Nugent recorded birdie, birdie and par to finish with a 40 to edge Fischer by a single shot.

Carley Sawyer and Plimpton both fired rounds of 42 in the third match. Ecret beat Kyle Miller 40-45 at No. 4, Courcelle earned a 43-49 win over Noah Haber in the fifth match, and Strack shot a 41 for an eight-stroke win over Brandon Lepage at No. 6.

The Indians headed into the match with an 8-0 record, and were competing without two of their top golfers, who were injured over the weekend while skateboarding and playing basketball.

“It was a great match,” Saranac Lake head coach Chris Stevens said. “When all the scores are under 50, that’s pretty rare in our league. Our kids have slowly been getting better, and that’s nice to see.”

Saranac Lake’s next match will be on the road Wednesday against Ticonderoga.
