Rotary names award recipient
LAKE PLACID – On May 1, the Lake Placid Rotary Club presented the Kate Smith award to Ally Wallace of Lake Placid High School.
This is an award that honors achievement in music and is given each year to an outstanding student.
At the meeting, Wallace honored the group by singing “Let It Go” from the movie “Frozen” and Demi Lovato’s “Warrior.” Also in attendance at the award ceremony included Ally’s parents, Linda and Scott Wallace, LPHS Principal, Dana Wood, and Instrumental Music Teacher, Katherine Hudson-Sabens. Jim Rogers and John Huttlinger shared memories of Kate Smith’s personality and style of interaction while spending her summers in Lake Placid.
The Lake Placid Rotary remembers the accomplishments of long-time summer resident, Kate Smith (May 1, 1907 to June 17, 1986), by annually awarding The Kate Smith Scholarship to a deserving Junior or Senior at Lake Placid High School. Kate Smith, who was well known for her performances on radio, T.V., and theater as well as being a successful vocal music recording star, enjoyed broadcasting her radio variety show during the summer from her camp on Lake Placid. She is, perhaps, best known for her rendition of Irving Berlin’s “God Bless America.”
