Summer youth Shakespeare workshop coming local

KEENE VALLEY – The Book & Blanket Players will hold a planning meeting and casting day on Friday, May 30 in anticipation of their annual intensive Youth-Theatre-in-a-Week workshop starting July 28.

The meeting will run from 3:15 to 5:15 p.m. at Keene Central School. Students age 8 to 18 are invited to play theater games and learn the details of the summer’s workshop, which are dependent on the number of kids attending.

This year’s theme is Shakespeare, featuring stage combat sessions and interpretive exercises culminating in a performance on the evening of Aug. 2. Tyrus Lemerande and Amy McLaughlin, of traveling nonprofit Knighthorse Theatre Company, will lead some sessions.

“Education is at the heart of everything we do,” Knighthorse founders Lemerande and McLaughlin said in a press release. “We want to turn your students on to Shakespeare. What we do on stage is fleeting unless we can spark discussion and exploration that lasts long after we’ve gone.”

The registration fee is $50 for the whole week, thanks to grants from the Stewart’s Foundation and support from East Branch Friends of the Arts and individuals.
