Institute announces Ad’k Roundtable Summer schedule
LAKE PLACID – The Lake Placid Institute recently announced its 2014 Adirondack Roundtable summer schedule.
The program, now in its twelfth year, brings public figures from the worlds of foreign policy, business and finance, the visual and performing arts, journalism and media, government and the humanities to present on a topic of their choice to audiences in a Saturday breakfast roundtable setting in the Mountain View Room of the Conference Center of Lake Placid. John C. Bogle, founder and CEO of Vanguard Funds, is chairman emeritus of the Adirondack Roundtable, which is advised by a board of 10 founders, both year-round and seasonal residents of the Tri-Lakes communities.
This year’s presenters and the subjects of their talks are as follows:
Saturday, July 12 Jules B. Kroll, Investigations, Intelligence, Security, and Risk Evaluation. Kroll is chairman and co-founder of K2 Intelligence and, prior to that, founder, in 1972, of Kroll Associates, which was the largest private investigations, intelligence, and security firm in the world. He is now also chairman and CEO of Kroll Bond Rating Agency, the first independent bond rating agency formed since the 2008 credit crisis.
Saturday, July 19 John B. Donovan, “Reflections on the Cold War: The Legacy of James Britt Donovan.” John Donovan is a foreign policy and communications consultant and son of James Britt Donovan, a co-founder of the CIA and the diplomat who conducted the historical exchange, in 1962, of the “strangers on a bridge,” between U.S. pilot Gary Francis Powers and Russian KGB agent Rudolf Abel. John Donovan is the author of articles and books about that dramatic event. The Donovans were longtime seasonal residents of Lake Placid, where James Britt Donovan served as President of the Lake Placid Education Foundation.
Saturday, August 9 Jay Ireland, “Sub-Saharan Africa: Recent Events, U.S. Relations, and the Economies of Africa.” Ireland, president and CEO of GE Africa, is a member of General Electric’s Corporate Executive Council, and responsible for the company’s operations in Sub-Saharan Africa, which includes more than 1500 professionals. Prior to this assignment, Jay Ireland was President and CEO of GE Asset Management, the global investment firm, and, before that, President of NBC Universal Television Stations and Network Operations. Ireland will be coming to Adirondack Roundtable directly from the United States – Africa Leaders Summit hosted by President Obama in Washington, D.C. The Irelands have been seasonal residents of Lake Placid for twenty years.
Adirondack Roundtables, which include a full breakfast, begin at 8:30 a.m., with the speaker presenting at 9, followed by a question and answer session. Cost of each Roundtable is $30 by reservation, $35 at the door, as seating is limited and reservations are strongly recommended.
