Lumberjacks repeat golf title

POTSDAM – The Tupper Lake golf team captured the Section X, Division II title Friday at the Potsdam Town and Country Club.

The Lumberjacks shot 473 as a team to easily beat Norwood-Norfolk (550) and Salmon River (563). It was the second consecutive year that the Lumberjacks won the sectional title.

The title follows a perfect regular season for the Lumberjacks, who finished 10-0 to capture the regular season title as well. Last year, Tupper Lake placed second during the regular season.

“It’s really awesome,” said sophomore Riley Amell, Tupper Lake’s top golfer. “We had a great team this year, and we only lost one person from last year, so we have basically the same team. It’s a bunch of great guys, and it’s really fun. But to see us play so solid and win the Section X trophy, it was pretty sweet.”

Amell led his team with an 85, shooting a 44 on the front nine followed by a 41. It tied the best score by a Section X, Division II golfer and was fourth best overall in the section. Jeff Mott of Division II Madrid-Waddington also shot an 85.

Amell said there’s room for improvement in his game.

“I was pretty solid, but my putting wasn’t that on,” Amell said. “I could have definitely done better.”

Overall, Tupper Lake will send five golfers to the Section X individual championships, which will also determine who goes to states. Amell will be joined in today’s tournament by Tyler Clark (98), Liam LaMere (99), Alex Lewis (98) and Josh Pickering (93). No. 3 golfer Ben Geiger was a little off Friday and shot a 106, so he won’t advance to today’s match.

“We actually had a goal of getting a 475 for a score today and we had a 473, so we beat that,” Lumberjacks coach Dan Cook said. “Every goal that we made at the beginning of the year, we accomplished. We have five kids coming back for the second day of sectionals, which is the most we’ve ever had. So we’re really happy with everything that’s happened this season from the regular season to the playoff victory. So we’re happy.”

In the girls competition, Tupper Lake’s Megan Pickering shot a 119 to finish second. Jayden Young of Norwood-Norfolk took first with a score of 108.

Individual awards were handed out to the golfers after the match, and Tupper Lake took home several All-Northern awards for Division II. Amell, Geiger, Lewis, LaMere and Megan Pickering made the Academic All-Northern team. LaMere got the team’s sportsman’s award. Clark, Geiger and Lewis made the All-Northern second team, Amell was named the MVP and Cook was named coach of the year.

“I’m just really proud of the guys and the girls this season,” Cook said. “They all worked really hard, and they had a goal individually for themselves and they all accomplished that. So we’re happy with that.”

Amell said it was a special day for him because he’ll be moving with his family from Tupper Lake this summer.

“This is my last year because I’m moving to North Carolina, so it was a really good memory to have with my team and my coach,” he said. “My coach was great. He was probably the best coach I’ve ever had.”
