Harrietstown board may bring in interim supervisor

SARANAC LAKE – The Harrietstown Town Council appears to have broken its deadlock over how to handle its supervisor vacancy.

Councilman and Deputy Supervisor Ron Keough has called a special meeting for Tuesday and says he’ll agree to bring in an interim supervisor. The meeting is set for 7 p.m. in the supervisor’s office in the Harrietstown Town Hall, 39 Main St.

Bob Bevilacqua resigned as supervisor last week due to a family medical issue.

When the rest of the board met last Tuesday to discuss the vacancy, board members were split about what they should do. Keough, who said he would continue to fill in as supervisor, and Councilwoman Nichole Meyette said they were comfortable continuing as a four-person board until the election of a new supervisor in November. Councilmen Ed Goetz and Howard Riley said they felt a five-person board is needed.

Keough and Meyette were on the board during a nearly eight-month period in 2012 after Supervisor Larry Miller resigned. They have said the four-member board functioned well. Riley and Goetz were not on the board then.

On Tuesday, Riley pushed for the appointment of town Budget Officer Mike Kilroy as interim supervisor. Former State Supreme Court Justice Jan Plumadore showed up at the meeting and put his name in the hat, too. Kilroy is a Democrat; Plumadore is a Republican.

The board couldn’t reach consensus on what to do next. A motion to put the decision on the agenda of its next regular meeting on June 12 failed on a split vote, leaving Keough in charge as deputy supervisor.

On Friday, Keough wrote a letter to his fellow board members saying he would call a special meeting to resolve the issue “by moving to a 5 person board and the appointment of a person to be named by the current board members.

“I believe that delaying that decision to the first regular meeting in June is not a productive use of time and resources to meet the needs of the town,” Keough wrote.
