Sawyer tops locals at state golf tourney

Saranac Lake’s Ethan Sawyer finished strong Monday in the state high school golf championships at Cornell University in Ithaca. The junior started off with an 80 on Sunday and followed with a 79 in the final round to finish in an eight-way tie for 29th place.

“On the second day what Ethan did really well was getting up and down from in close to the greens,” said head coach Chris Stevens of the Section VII champion Red Storm. “He didn’t hit a lot of greens in regulation, but he chipped well and then made some putts. That was a big accomplishment there, because the greens were rolling PGA style.”

Sawyer led a contingent of six golfers from the Tri-Lakes area who qualified for the tournament held on the Robert Trent Jones designed course.

Riley Amell, a Tupper Lake sophomore, made a big climb in the standings on the second day. As the lone member of the Lumberjacks Division II, Section X championship team competing at Cornell, Amell opened play with a 94 and then came back to fire an 80 in the second round to finish in a tie for 75th place on the par-71 layout.

Senior Dustin Fischer ended his career at Saranac Lake with his third trip to the state championships. He shot a 96 and followed with an 89.

Three Lake Placid golfers also competed at the state tournament. Kiefer Casler led the way with rounds of 89 and 86 to tie for 78th place. Also for the Blue Bombers, Bjorn Kroes shot two rounds of 91 to wind up in a tie for 88th place, and Pat Kane followed up a 96 with a round of 94 to take 94th place.

Brushton-Moira junior Devin Delisle turned in the most impressive performance among golfers from the North Country. He started with a 77 and then shot a one-under par 70 in the final round to finish in a tie for fourth place.

Senior Jack Gianniny of Section V’s Pittsford Sutherland won the individual title with an even par after 142 total after shooting rounds of 73 and 69.
