Special ed teachers aren’t fully appreciated

To the editor:

I am deeply saddened by the recent cuts that have taken place in the Saranac Lake Central School District with teachers and teachers assistants, especially in the special education department. This is where I have to ask myself, is this actually for the best interest of the students? Have any of you ever been impacted by a special education child?

I think it is time for the administration and the board members to pull up a seat in these classrooms and see firsthand what these what these very qualified teachers and teachers assistants do on a daily basis, and then just maybe you will not be so liberal about pushing them out the door.

I have experienced firsthand many of these teachers and coaches take money out of their own pockets for students to make sure they have eaten or even as much as contributing supplies for a project that was due. With that being said, I do not feel that these teachers are “trying to line their own pockets.”

To all you teachers, teachers aides and teaching assistants in the Saranac Lake Central School District, your hard work and dedication does not go unnoticed. To the administration and board members of the Saranac Lake school district, I truly hope these will be the last of the poor decisions that this district will face.

Sincerely,

Kyle Hayes
