Chapot continues speed dominance
LAKE PLACID – Laura Chapot continued her hot streak at the I Love New York Horse Show on Thursday by winning both featured classes for the second day in a row.
The Neshanic Station, New Jersey resident took top prize in both the $5,000 High Peaks Resort 1.40m Speed Stake and the $1,500 WPTZ News Channel 5 1.35m Speed Class on Thursday to continue her speed class domination.
Chapot topped a field of 32 horses and won the one-round 1.40m Speed Stake by finishing fault-free in the fastest time of 57.457 seconds on Zealous. She also placed third in the class on Castellana, eighth on Bradberry and 10th on Shooting Star. Victoria Colvin finished second with a fault-free ride in 58.629 seconds on Don Juan.
In the 1.35m Class, Chapot topped a field of 29 horses by riding Umberto to the fastest clean round, finishing in a time of 55.039 seconds. Linda Langmeier placed second with a clean round in 56.199 seconds on Rafino.
The I Love New York Horse Show, the second of three consecutive horse shows at the North Elba Show Grounds, runs through Sunday and is followed by the inaugural Adirondack Horse Show, July 9-13.
Highlighting the weekend will be the $15,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby, presented by Eastern Hay & Purina Animal Nutrition, on Saturday and the $75,000 I Love New York Grand Prix, presented by Sea Shore Stables, on Sunday.
Also on Sunday, the horse show hosts its 22nd annual Doggie Costume Contest. All people with leashed dogs in costume are admitted to the horse show free of charge. Everyone is invited to participate, whether they are part of the horse show or not. Contestants will take center stage at noon in a special ring set up near the horse show’s Richard M. Feldman Grand Prix Field. The contest’s co-sponsors, Animal Planet and The Brown Dog Cafe and Wine Bar, will present awards including the Lulu Perpetual Trophy for the funniest costume. Categories include Best in Show first, second and third place with two honorable mentions. There is no entry fee, and all contestants receive a special bag of doggie treats.
Admission to the Lake Placid Horse Shows is $2 on weekdays and $5 on weekends. Children under the age of 12 are admitted free. Discounts are available for groups of 20 or more and admission is half price with a Price Chopper Advantage Card. Tickets are available at the gate. The horse shows are located at the North Elba Show Grounds in Lake Placid.
