Edward H. Fitzgerald

Edward H. Fitzgerald, 73, of Peachwood Way in Lake Placid, passed away Friday, July 4, 2014, at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake.

He was born in Lake Placid on April 4, 1941, the son of Timothy and Margaret (Lacy) Fitzgerald. He was a graduate of Lake Placid High School, Class of 1960, and earned his associate’s degree in business at Albany Business School. Ed was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving in the United States Navy from 1965 to 1969. Ed was a proud member of the American Legion Post 326 in Lake Placid and served as post commander in 2011. He had worked various jobs in Lake Placid, including at the Lake Placid Club, the Olypmic Regional Development Authority and also as a butcher. He retired from the Mirror Lake Inn in 2004. Ed was active in the American Legion Drum & Bugle Corps. He was troop leader of the Lake Placid Boy Scouts Troop 10 and was proud to have earned the Order of Arrow award. He loved wood carving and also enjoyed golf, fishing and camping.

Ed is survived by his wife, Ann E. (Cayea) Fitzgerald of Lake Placid; one son, Conan Fitzgerald and his wife Sarah and their son Sean of Saranac Lake; and three brothers: Tim Fitzgerald of Jay, James Fitzgerald and his companion Anne Muncy of Round Rock, Texas, and John Fitzgerald and his wife Olympia of Sherman, Connecticut. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Mary Cayea of Lake Placid; one brother-in-law, Theodore Cayea and his wife Fayne of Essex Junction, Vermont; his faithful cat, Lucky; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, Timothy and Margaret, and his father-in-law, Theodore Cayea.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, July 6 with an American Legion prayer service at 8:30 p.m., followed by a Bible vigil service at 8:45 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, July 7 at St. Agnes Church in Lake Placid. The Rev. Patrick O’Reilly will officiate. Cremation will follow. Burial will be in St. Agnes Cemetery at a later date.
