Red Wilcox scholarship a success

To the editor:

I was lucky myself to have experienced both baseball and softball at all levels with Mr. Red Wilcox behind the plate. He lived what he believed and passed on to so many what sportsmanship and respect within the game really meant.

Unfortunately, the Lord called Red home earlier this year, and he lay to rest in his signature umpire attire. I don’t know, with the changing times, if we will ever see another person so committed to a passion they love as Red was for baseball in Saranac Lake, but I do hope so. And in an attempt to keep this spirit alive, we were able to offer a scholarship to a graduating senior from the baseball team and softball team this year.

Both recipients displayed in their young lives their love of the game, and have done so with great success. More so than that is that these two graduates have stepped up and donated their time in coaching and mentoring the youth baseball/softball children in the past several years. Continue on with the passion of Red, and enjoy the sport throughout your adult lives.

This scholarship would not of been possible without donations made by people in this community who loved Red. Donors are Aubuchon Hardware, Coakley High Peaks Ace Hardware, Fred and Dorothy Dennis, Calvin and Christina Schmeichel, Martin Kunath, Jodi Gunther, Phil and Barbara Capone, Laura Duncan and Michelle Raville, Louis Wilcox, Donna and Craig Wilcox, and Howard and Angelina Frizzell.

Thank you. There has been some great baseball and softball games this year. In the spirit of Red, get out there and catch a game and enjoy one of America’s favorite pastimes. PLAY BALL.
