Lake Placid Middle School Chorus earns gold for fifth year

LAKE?PLACID -?The Lake Placid Middle School Chorus was awarded a gold medal for its performance at the New York State Music Association Major Organization Festival on May 22.

The festival, held at the Lake Placid Middle/High School this year, consisted of nine performing ensembles from the region. Each group performed three selections for a panel of two adjudicators. Ensembles were given a rating of bronze, silver or gold for their performance. Gold Ratings are given annually to ensembles that have demonstrated an outstanding level of technical and artistic skill in all of the evaluative categories for each of their three selections.

The Middle School Chorus performed under the direction of LPMHS Choral Director Kimberly Weems and was accompanied by Kathryn Cross.

They were adjudicated at NYSSMA Level III. The chorus opened their performance with the a cappella Renaissance madrigal “Sing We and Chant It” by Thomas Morley, and arranged by Russell Robinson.

Their second selection was “Durme, Durme,” a Sephardic lullaby from the 15th century, sung in the Ladino (Judeo-Spanish) language and arranged by Audrey Snyder. The chorus completed their adjudication performance with “Gaudeamus Hodie,” a modern, energetic setting of the Latin text by Earlene Rentz.

The adjudicators remarked on the outstanding tone, blend and attention to musical detail in the performance, and awarded top honors to the chorus.

This year marks the fifth time the Middle School Chorus has participated in the festival. The 45-member ensemble has earned a gold medal every year.

They also traveled to Albany this year to perform at the New York State Capitol for National Music in Our Schools Month. The chorus was then represented by 21 members at the NYSSMA Solo and Ensemble Festival in May. Each of the soloists was awarded either an excellent or outstanding rating by the adjudicators.

The chorus will return in the fall to prepare for performances in school and as part of Lake Placid’s Holiday Village Stroll.
