LP upends Teddy’s for title
BLOOMINGDALE – The Lake Placid Blue baseball team used three home runs to power past Teddy’s Ice Cream with a 5-1 victory Wednesday to capture the Saranac Lake Youth Baseball League Majors championship.
After both starting pitchers struck out the side to open the first inning, Jesse Izzo stepped to the plate in the bottom of the second and blasted a solo shot deep over the centerfield fence. Lake Placid tacked on another run in the inning when Matt Brandes came home on a Connor Reid single.
Izzo struck again to lead off the fourth inning, launching another deep shot over the fence to give Lake Placid a 3-0 lead. Brandes followed with his second single of the game and scored when Cole Jacques cleared the fence with another Lake Placid home run.
Lake Placid was able to hold off Teddy’s the rest of the way with solid pitching and strong defense.
Teddy’s scored its only run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Dylan Amell came home after recording his second hit of the game.
Teddy’s starting pitcher Robert Stevenson struck out seven over three innings of work and reached base twice. Quinn Peer added a single and a double.
Izzo also struck out seven as Lake Placid’s starter. He helped his own cause at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two home runs and a single.
Teddy’s Ice Cream was the regular season champion after racking up an 11-1 record. Lake Placid Blue went 8-4 on the season, and was responsible for Teddy’s only regular season defeat.
Lake Placid Gold finished third in the standings with a 4-8 record, while Elks Lodge #1508 was fourth at 1-11.
Lake Placid Blue advanced to Wednesday’s championship with a 2-0 victory over crosstown rival Lake Placid Gold on Monday. Teddy’s downed Elk’s Lodge 11-2 in the semifinals.
The SLYBL Minors championship game is set for tonight at 6 p.m. on the Fish and Game Club field on Averyville Road in Lake Placid. Hyde Fuel will take on Colby Construction.
