LP captures own tourney
LAKE PLACID – Lake Placid used a late-game comeback Saturday to secure a 4-3 victory over Ogdensburg in the championship game of the Lake Placid Youth Athletic Association 16U fastpitch softball tournament.
The Blue Bombers scored four runs in the fifth inning to erase a 2-0 deficit and take control of the game. Melanie Adams got things started with a single to lead off the inning and moved into scoring position on a Mia Kennedy sacrifice bunt. Adams scored on an Ogdensburg error and another run came across on a Lizzie Bimonte RBI single.
Casey Frederick delivered the game-winning hit when she blasted a home run to deep left field that scored two and gave Lake Placid a 4-2 advantage. Ogdensburg threatened with a run in the sixth, but the Bombers’ pitching and defense came through when Iris Glinski made a running catch in right field to end the game.
Lake Placid started the day with a 5-4 win over Massena. Adams, a Northeastern Clinton student, went 2-for-3 with two RBI to pace the Lake Placid offense. Annalise Simons of Atlanta, Georgia, chipped in two hits and Myranda Miller (NCCS) had a triple.
Carissa Kennedy of Lake Placid went the distance in the pitcher’s circle to lock up the victory. She struck out three, walked one and scattered five hits.
Lake Placid dropped its second game as Ogdensburg got two timely hits in the bottom of the seventh inning to grab the win. Mia Kennedy sparked the Blue Bombers’ offense with two hits, while Simons, Miller and Lauren Stanley each had one.
Lake Placid then faced Massena in the semifinals and came away with an 8-1 victory. Bimonte went 4-for-4 with a double, a triple and three RBI and Carissa Kennedy picked up the pitching win after allowing just two hits and striking out six.
The Blue Bombers will end their season in Georgia, Vermont, Aug. 1-3 at the Vermont Rockets Invitational.
