Dorris Pauline Loomis

Dorris Pauline Loomis, 91, passed away at her home in Saranac Shores on Saturday, July 19, 2014.

Dorris was born on April 30, 1923, in Tully to Pauline and Lester Zufelt. She grew up in Pulaski with five siblings. She graduated from Pulaski Academy in 1939 and then majored in physical education at Cortland State Teacher’s College until 1944. In 1968, Dorris received her master’s degree from the University of Buffalo in remedial reading. Dorris strongly believed that an education was a necessary life goal. She taught physical education and health in the Sherrill and Buffalo school systems.

In 1948, Dorris married the love of her life, Dr. Richard E. Loomis. They moved to Hamburg, New York, where they raised their two children. They were active in church, scouting, Red Cross and many other organizations. In 1990, upon Richard’s retirement from dentistry, they moved to their Saranac Shores home. Dorris’ love of reading naturally led her to volunteer for more than 14 years at the Saranac Lake Free Library.

Dorris loved the created world around her and inspired others to work with her in protecting and preserving its beauty. Dorris could identify almost any bird not only by its markings but also by its song. Dorris’ love of nature led her to teach others through canoe trips, climbing some of the High Peaks, whitewater rafting and camping. Dorris also belonged to the Audubon Society, the Wildlife Federation, the Bartlett Carry Association, The Wild Center and the Upper Saranac Lake Association.

Dorris loved playing bridge and cribbage with a competitive spirit to win. She was an accomplished seamstress, knitter and painter, and was skilled at needlework of all kinds. Dorris had endless creativity. As matriarch of the family, Dorris was an incredible cook, providing endless healthy meals for her family. Every year, using her special recipes, she made jams, canned pickles and froze produce.

Dorris took an active and avid interest in the lives and accomplishments of her children and grandchildren. All who knew her will miss her. The legacy of the special things she taught her family members continues to enrich their lives. Dorris is survived by Dr. Richard E. Loomis, her loving husband of more than 66 years. Dorris was mother of Deborah Ann Miller of Valparaiso, Indiana, and Eric Richard Loomis of East Blue Hill, Maine, and an incredible grandmother to Jeremy Miller of Bethesda, Maryland, Matthew Miller of Denver, Colorado, Dr. Tyler (Stephanie) Miller of Buffalo, Corbett Miller of Valparaiso, Indiana, Kindle Loomis of Burlington, Vermont, and Caper Loomis of East Blue Hill, Maine.

Cremation is by Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. A celebration of life service will be held in Saranac Lake with details to be forthcoming. In lieu of flowers, donations in Dorris’ memory can be made to The Wild Center in Tupper Lake, attention Tim Holmes.
