SARANAC LAKE – A local man was arrested Wednesday on a slew of charges after he crashed his car while being pursued by village police for his role in a reported domestic dispute.

Wesley M. Dias Jr., 51, of Saranac Lake, was charged with first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, driving while intoxicated, endangering the welfare of a child, third-degree unlawful fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, third-degree falsely reporting an incident, reckless driving, speed not reasonable and prudent, failure to obey a police officer, failure to keep right and failure to signal a turn.

Police said Dias was involved in two domestic incidents that took place earlier in the day, including him allegedly threatening another person with a baseball bat in an apartment at the Algonquin Apartments on George LaPan Highway.

When police arrived at apartment complex just before 7 p.m., Dias allegedly fled the scene in a vehicle, then crashed it into the guiderails near the intersection of LaPan Highway and Lake Street.

Dias suffered what police described as minor injuries and was transported to Adirondack Medical Center-Saranac Lake by the Saranac Lake Volunteer Rescue Squad. He was treated and released.

Dias was brought back to the police station, processed, arraigned in Harriestown town court and remanded to the Franklin County Jail in Malone in lieu of $10,000 cash bail or $20,000 bond.

The Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department responded to the crash at 6:59 p.m. with one truck and nine members. Firefighters were back in service at 8:31 p.m.
