Lanthier says goodbye to Tupper school district

TUPPER LAKE – Tupper Lake Central School District business manager Garry Lanthier attended his last school board meeting Monday night.

Lanthier served as the district’s business manager for nine years.

“On behalf of the Tupper Lake Central School District, the students, the staff, the board of education and the community, I’d like to thank you and tell you how much I’ll miss you,” Tupper Lake district Superintendent Seth McGowan said as he handed Lanthier a plaque of appreciation.

McGowan noted that Lanthier was on the school board before he took the business manager position.

“It’s been a pleasure serving the school district for the past 19 years,” Lanthier said. “As a board member, and the last nine years as business manager, I always looked out for the students first and the taxpayer second.”

Lanthier thanked McGowan, the school board members and his staff in the business office for their work.

“We went through three state audits. They hadn’t been in the district in 30 years, and then I took over and they were here three times,” Lanthier said with a laugh. “I won’t miss seeing them.”

Lanthier’s Sept. 1 retirement date marks the end of decades of accounting work, something he said he’ll miss.

“I’ve been in the accounting field for 38 years and I love doing it but, as you know, my wife retired four years ago and I love her more,” Lanthier said.

Dan Bower, the Saranac Lake Central School District’s assistant superintendent, will officially take over Lanthier’s position Aug. 31. Bower was appointed at the Tupper Lake school board’s June 2 meeting.

Bower has lived in Tupper Lake for the last 16 years. He has worked for Saranac Lake schools for the last four-and-a-half years. Before that he was business manager and then superintendent of the Tupper Lake district.

There will be an overlap during the transition when Bower will work with Lanthier and also with his replacement at Saranac Lake. Saranac Lake district Superintendent Diane Fox and McGowan will oversee that transition.

So far, the Saranac Lake Central School District has not announced Bower’s replacement.
