Whalen, DeAngelo repeat as Olga champs

SARANAC LAKE – Jared Whalen successfully defended his Olga Memorial Footrace title Saturday, winning the 10-kilometer race in 39 minutes, 53 seconds. He won last year’s 10k in 39:07.

Whalen won the 5k race in 2011 and was second in the 5k in 2012.

Whalen outran runner-up finisher Andy Pickreign and third-place finisher Max Paul on Saturday. Pickreign, who was fourth last year with a 39:43, clocked a time of 41:45. Paul improved on his 10th place finish last year in 45:05 with a 42:51.

Jacinda Hughes was the top female 10k finisher with a time of 44:06, which was good for sixth place overall.

Maria DeAngelo was another repeat champion after outpacing the field in the 5k walk with a time of 33:21. She won last year’s 5k walk in 34:11.

Laura Mathieu was the top 5k runner with her time of 22:23. Gus Branch placed second with a 22:29 and Matthew Richer was third in 22:37.

The 17th annual Olga Memorial Footrace featured 50 total runners and walkers taking on the course that ran through the village of Saranac Lake. Proceeds from the event benefited area youth for the construction of the skate park, which is currently underway. The organization is trying to raise the final $30,000 for the project.
