Rotary Wiffle tourney a big hit
TUPPER LAKE – The Rotary Club of Tupper Lake held its inaugural Wiffle Ball Tournament on the Lumberjacks football field at the high school in July.
All proceeds from the event went to support local youth activities in Tupper Lake.
In the championship game, Tupper Lake Supply squared off against the Rotary Club All Stars. Brothers Ted Merihew (Tupper Lake Supply) and Jim Merrihew pitched for the opposing teams, with Tupper Lake Supply escaping with an 11-10 win in extra innings.
Tupper Lake Supply owner Rickey Dattola knocked in the winning run, while teammate Maynard Peroza won the men’s batting average title.
Jim Merrihew recorded a grand slam for the Rotary All Stars and teammate Kathy LeFebvre was awarded the batting title for women.
The tournament took place on eight diamonds. Games were played with the official yellow wiffle ball bat and a plastic ball, with “ghost” runners and medium-speed pitching. Each team had four to five players on co-ed teams and different age brackets.
